Nail Care Tips

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011
  • Every night, before you go off to sleep, wash your hands thoroughly, wipe them dry with a towel and apply a hand moisturizer. Thereafter, rub a small amount of petroleum jelly into the cuticle as well as the skin surrounding your nails.
  • Whenever you are indulging in any kind of housework, be it doing the dishes or scrubbing the bathroom, make sure to wear hand gloves. This will prevent unnecessary chipping and save your nails from the harsh cleaners as well.
  • Drink plenty of water and fresh fruit juices. It will help keep your body, and in turn your nails, well hydrated.
  • Never ever use an acetone-based or formaldehyde-based nail-polish remover. Rather, stick to a remover that has acetate in it.
  • Do not file you nails just after you have had a shower or have washed your hands. This is because wet nails tend to break easily. While filing your nails, make sure to go in one direction only. Do not move the filer in a back-and-forth motion, as it makes your nails brittle.
  • If you want to keep your nails strong and shiny, resort to nail buffing. It augments the blood supply to the nail, in turn stimulating its growth.
  • Stay away from artificial nails as much as possible. Apart from destroying the underlying nail with their chemicals and glue, they might also lead to fungal infection of the fingernails.
  • If you are suffering from the problem of hangnails, it is advisable to eat food rich in protein, vitamin C and folic acid.
  • If your nails are too brittle and dry, you should increase the consumption of food items that are rich in vitamin A (such as apricots, broccoli, carrot and cheese) and calcium (such as milk, yoghurt, cheese and almonds). Carrot juice is rich in calcium and phosphorus and helps strengthen your nails. So, try to consume as much fresh carrot juice as is possible for you.
  • Ensure that half of your diet is made up of fresh fruits and raw vegetables. This will supple your nails with the required vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
  • Supplementing your diet with Spirulina and kelp will help make your nails strong and healthy. Deficiency of vitamin B 12 can lead to dryness, rounded and curved ends and darkening of nails. So, make sure to include enough of the vitamin in your diet.

This attractive and comprehensive selection of clear skin products covers a wide range of skin cleansing and healing applications. It includes washes, cleansers, moisturizers and scrubs as well as a treatment for spots.

This clear skin range by Beauty Formulas is extremely effective in cleansing the skin and making it soft and supple. The face masks and eye pads are especially very convenient to use and give great results. And the best part is that they aren’t even very expensive! They can easily save you a trip to the parlour. All of these products are very gentle on the skin and with regular use bring about a glow to the face. Other hygiene and dental care products by Beauty Formulas are equally good and effective. The brand is relatively well known in the UK, however, in India, New U stores exclusively stock their products.

Simple Tips for Healthy, Gorgeous Tresses

  1. Brush your hair gently before going to bed each night.
  2. Avoid using hair dyes. Use mehandi (henna) instead of a colouring agent.
  3. Take a calcium supplement or drink two glasses of milk DAILY.
  4. After a perm, never brush your hair. Instead comb your hair gently.
  5. Trim your hair once in 7-8 weeks to avoid split ends.
  6. Avoid pulling back your hair tightly for too long.
  7. Never use a rubber band on your hair as it can pull and damage hair considerably.
  8. Avoid going out in the sun without having your head covered.
  9. Stimulate circulation by massaging your head with oil containing vitamin E. This will make your hair soft and silky.
  10. Learn to relax. Hair loss can happen because of stress. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin B, C and E. Add iron and minerals in the natural form in your diet, and don’t forget to drink loads of water!

Tips to Look Gorgeous and Stay Healthy this Winter

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Getting on a summer look is simple: flip flops and skimpy clothes. But when the weather changes for the cold, you need expert advice. Here’s how you can look good during the colder months, even when bundled in a shape-hiding sweater!

  1. Care for your skin. In the winter, with harsh winds and heating on full-blast, most skin types will dry out quickly. Drink plenty of water and apply oil-free, easily absorbed light body lotions to all parts of your body.
  2. Maintain your hair. Though showering daily is considered good taste, many have found that they should wash their hair using products every other day, or even less! The reasoning behind this is simple: washing your hair strips it of its natural oils, causing it to dry out and split ends to form – a problem amplified by the winter. Leave in a moisturizing conditioner or hair mask on the last 3 to 5 inches of your hair for about 15 minutes, once a week in order to keep it soft. Also, brush hair from the scalp to the tips, to spread the natural oils. This strengthens your hair and gives it a silky feel.
  3. Use a different makeup palette. For the face, lighten or forgo foundation completely, and use a rosy, warm pink on your cheeks. Mixing a tiny dusting of bronzer with your blush can be a good maneuver too.
  4. Contrast warm cheeks by using a cooler lip and eye scheme. Consider “going bare” at the eyes – a quick layer of charcoal mascara on your upper lashes, and no eyeliner. This serves to brighten and enlarge your eyes. Cream eye-shadows are also good winter choices: unlike during the summer, they will not “melt off”. Colors in the pale blues, whites, and gray-blues are lovely ways to adjust your makeup to the cooler months.
  5. Use Lip Balm. Use lip balm religiously. Apply every ten to twenty minutes, or as needed. Cracked lips are unattractive. Any kind will suffice, in a pinch, with SPF included in the formula. It is light and leaves your lips feeling much softer.
  6. Dress in layers. To dress for the winter, this will get you surprisingly far! A half-button down shirt, layered over any polo, with a jacket on top, is always a good look – simply match similar collars so that bottom one shows and folds over a bit. Jeans are a winter staple, as are comfortable boots. If you’re outdoors in the cold, always have a coat on!
  7. Natural beauty is never beaten. Very rarely does anything top a quick daub of lip-gloss and a freshly washed face.
  8. Have an exercise routine- Don’t turn into a couch potato just because the temperature drops a few degrees. Put on your thermals and get out there.
  9. Eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Hearty home-made vegetable soups are great for cold days. These foods will provide vitamins that aid the immune system and are also rich in anti-oxidants.
  10. Look forward to spring. Plan new goals and some enjoyable activities to look forward to!
